TangoBar was a weekly Tuesday night milonga run by TangoClub, but we have decided to run the TangoFactory practica instead in this time slot. We encourage tango lovers to go to other milongas in Auckland.

A brief history of TangoBar milongas in Auckland

The Crib (May 2011 - August 2011)

The Crib at 151 Ponsonby Road, Ponsonby was the perfect milonga venue. Bigger than the previous bars we have danced in, it featured a separate area where we could tango without disturbing other patrons. The central location was also beautifully decorated. Unfortunately, after a couple of quiet nights during the Rugby World Cup, the bar decided to close on Tuesday evenings to cut back on costs.

Sugar Bar (March 2010 - May 2010)

The Sugar Bar at 3A York Street, Newmarket was our most atmospheric venue yet, with black and white tiles, big comfy armchairs, a wide selection of fine drinks, and an outdoor courtyard area. Tucked away in a little alley at the heart of Newmarket, it was the perfect spot for a relaxing evening of dancing. Unfortunately, the bar did not normally stay open late on Tuesday nights, and the support of tango dancers was not enough for the business to remain open for us.

Grand Central (August 2009 - February 2010)

We had an exclusive dancing area in the upstairs function room of Grand Central at 126 Ponsonby Road, Ponsonby. With a beautiful wooden floor and the same bar stools from Bar de Baz, it was like attending an exclusive party when you walked up those stairs, hard as it may have been to move away from the friendly bar staff and seats by the fireplace. Bar manager Jess was also the creator of the very popular "TangoClub Special", similar to a non-alcoholic Moscow Mule. Thanks for looking after us, Jess and Neil!

Bar de Baz (February 2008 - July 2009)

Our original TangoBar milonga was at Bar de Baz (now the site of Cosh) at 153 - 155 Ponsonby Road, Ponsonby. With floor length windows and easy street access, we hoped that this beautiful bar which caught our eye would also inspire passers-by to dance. Marcus completed the look from behind the bar, with his easy smile and what some considered to be Argentinian features.
